Blue Back Square
Blue Back Square will be a new pedestrian heart of downtown West Hartford, Connecticut. The urban redevelopment project will become the centerpiece of two large city blocks with mixed use, retail, office, residential and municipal functions that will expand the existing Town Center. This project will include the regeneration of a brownfield site, the expansion of town facilities and public open space, and the development of new retail space with national retailers, two municipal parking garages, restaurants, offices, a health club and residential condominiums. Langan provided complete site/civil, landscape design, environmental and geotechnical engineering services including the layout of new roads, sidewalks, parking facilities, utilities, storm water management systems and roadway improvements. The new streetscape was designed with granite curbs, unit pavers, concrete banding, decorative bollards and street lighting that meshes with the character of the existing downtown. Additionally, new street trees were installed at mature sizes to give residents the sense that this neighborhood grew along with the rest of the community.
