REAL-TIME CONSULTING HELPS TARGET MEET CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE
A new Target Store now rests upon a former Brownfield site in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, once home to various industrial activities. Langan provided fast-track geotechnical and environmental engineering services, and acted as an owner’s representative, during the aggressive construction schedule.
During construction, a landfill was discovered within a portion of the building footprint. The waste-filled former quarry is underlain by limestone and the subsurface is prone to sinkhole development. Langan’s subsurface investigation delineated the extent of the quarry and waste material, and determined the potential for sinkhole development within the building area.
Langan’s foundation system recommendations consisted of drilled mini-piles, piers on rock, and strip footings on fill and native soil. A ground improvement program of proof-drilling and grouting was implemented to overcome the highly variable subsurface conditions. Our real-time consulting services enabled Target to open its store on-time, just 9 months after the start of foundation construction, earning Langan an ACEC / PA award for engineering excellence.
