WESTIN DIPLOMAT RESORT RESTS ON AUGERCAST PILE FOUNDATION

The 1,000-room Westin Diplomat Resort and Spa in Hollywood, Florida, consists of twin 39-story hotel towers overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, an 8-story convention center, 6 on-site restaurants, golf, tennis, a full-service spa, 2 marinas offering charter fishing and water sports, and an associated retail village and garage.

Langan’s key role in this magnificent hotel complex included extensive subsurface investigations of the underlying compressible organic silts, peats and soft rock. These difficult subsurface conditions, and an expedited project schedule, complicated the design and installation of foundation systems and required specialized site-preparation techniques.

Based on Langan’s foundation recommendations, 3,000 Augercast piles were installed to support low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise structures. We also provided construction quality control inspection and monitoring. Geofoam lightweight fill allowed significant raising of grades on top of existing settlement-sensitive utilities and an adjacent on-grade condominium slab. Our scope included seawall foundation design, earthwork, site preparation, an innovative deep stormwater exfiltration trench, and specialized lightweight filling.
