SCP
CARLSTADT HDPE / SLURRY WALL CONTAINMENT SYSTEM
Langan provided RI/FS/RD, construction
oversight and program management services to the Potential Responsible
Party (PRP) Group for this Superfund Site located in an industrial/commercial
area near the Meadowlands Sports Complex. The 6-acre site had
operated as a solvent recovery facility prior to ceasing operations
in 1980 and contaminants are present as both residual and free
phases (sludges, DNAPLs) in the soil and groundwater. An interim
remedy, developed as a result of a value engineering process applied
by Langan to provide containment, consists of a perimeter soil/bentonite
slurry wall with a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) membrane insert
(both keyed into a clay layer), an HDPE temporary cap, and extraction
and off-site treatment of contaminated groundwater from within
the containment. The Interim Remedy effectively isolated the site
from the surrounding environment including an adjacent creek.
Langan provided engineering inspection and technical oversight
during construction of the Interim Remedy and researched and evaluated
numerous treatment technologies for applicability as components
of a permanent remedy, including insitu and exsitu stabilization
of organic and inorganic wastes.
