SCP CARLSTADT SUPERFUND INTERIM REMEDY
Langan provided RI/FS/RD, construction oversight and program management services to the Potential Responsible Party (PRP) Group for this 5.9 Superfund site. Located near the Meadowlands Sports Complex, this site received numerous types of wastes for recovery, reprocessing and/or disposal prior to ceasing operations in 1980. Contaminants are present as both residual and free phases (sludges, DNAPLs) in the soil and groundwater. The interim remedy developed by Langan consisted of a perimeter slurry wall with an HDPE membrane insert (both keyed into a clay layer), an HDPE temporary cap, and extraction and off-site treatment of contaminated groundwater from within the containment. Langan also provided engineering inspection and oversight during construction of the interim remedy, which was completed in 1992 and continues to function as designed. Various in situ and ex situ treatment technologies were evaluated by Langan as remedial alternatives. Rough cost estimates were developed and compared to containment as a permanent remedy.
