CAMPBELL
SOUP PLANT DECOMMISIONING
The abandoned Campbell Soup Factory,
contaminated with asbestos and other hazardous materials, occupied
a prime area on the Camden waterfront and thwarted efforts to
revitalize the area. A team consisting of Langan, the NJ Economic
Development Authority, and Campbell Soup was formed to explore
the feasibility of site clean-up, building demolition and redevelopment
of the waterfront. Langan was charged with the evaluation and
remediation design of all aspects of the contamination, the preparation
of construction documents for the demolition of over 600,000 square
feet of multi-level industrial structures and the design of infrastructure
improvements to support the new developments. Removal of asbestos
and other hazardous materials prior to demolition resulted in
usable demolition rubble. Of the 150,000 tons of demolition rubble,
all except 800 tons was reused on-site resulting in a $3,000,000
cost savings. Maintenance of the fast-track schedule necessitated
simultaneous interior and exterior remediation and clean-up. The
entire project was completed in just 32 months, on schedule and
within budget, as an important first step in the redevelopment
of the Camden Waterfront. The project received the American Consulting
Engineers Council Award for Excellence.
