SOUTH
FLORIDA WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT
Under an environmental services
contract with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD),
Langan conducted Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments
(ESA) of approximately 120-acres of agricultural land in Lee County,
Florida. The land had historically been used for the cultivation
of tomatoes and cucumbers, and most recently, watermelon. The
purpose of the assessments was to identify environmental concerns
associated with the site prior to purchase by the SFWMD. The intended
use for the property is to restore the historic overland flow
patterns as part of the Critical Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem
Watershed (CREW). Upon completion of the Phase I portion of the
study, a Phase II ESA was conducted to address several areas of
concern. These include potential soil and groundwater contamination
associated with aboveground storage tanks located at four on-site
diesel-powered pump stations and within the cultivated areas associated
with on-site agrochemical application, and potentially contaminated
sediment within the on-site water impoundment area and irrigation
ditches. Soil, groundwater and sediment samples were collected
from select areas and tested for a comprehensive suite of laboratory
analyses. Based on the cumulative data, Langan determined that
there were no conditions that would inhibit the use of the property
for its intended purpose.
