SWISS
BANK CORPORATION URBAN REDEVELOPMENT
The new 1.2 million square foot
regional headquarters of the Swiss Bank Corporation, with state-of-theart
trading floor, covers twelve acres and four city blocks. The project
required demolition of twenty existing structures within a blighted
area of downtown Stamford, CT. Langan developed a subsurface investigation
program aimed at providing all of the geotechnical information
required to design the three-phase implementation of this project.
Concerns included differential settlement between the Trading
Building and the adjoining Office Towers to be founded on different
bearing strata; potential groundwater problems in the lower parking
levels; and preconstruction for the Phase 2 and 3 Office Towers
two levels lower than the Phase 1 construction. A cost-effective
spread, strip and mat foundation system accommodated high loads
and variable subsurface conditions, meeting all of the owner's
needs and adhering to the fast-track schedule. Langan has assisted
in the implementation of this design through on-site foundation
construction supervision allowing for timely selection of specified
alternative foundation designs.
