TECHNICAL
IMPRACTICABILITY DETERMINATION
Langan has conducted a comprehensive
multi-media investigation at this former industrial facility in
New Jersey. The investigation revealed widespread volatile organic
contamination in the groundwater, and soils contaminated with
heavy metals and cyanide. Several distinct contaminant plumes
were identified and characterized in the unconsolidated deposits
and bedrock beneath this site. Remediation of shallow aromatic
contaminant plumes and dissolved chlorinated hydrocarbons have
been addressed primarily by source removal and control. Natural
degradation processes have been effective at reducing residual
levels of the aromatic compounds. The occurrence of Dense Non-Aqueous
Phase Liquid (DNAPL) migrating along the top of the bedrock surface
was investigated to determine the extent and potential extent
of migration. Based on the results of the investigation, Langan
developed and executed a pilot testing program consisting of In-Situ
Chemical Oxidation and Air Sparging/Soil Vapor Extraction technologies.
The regulatory compliance strategy incorporates requirements of
the USEPA Technical Impracticability Evaluation Guidance and NJDEP
Classification Exception Area policy.
