The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) announced the winners and finalists for the CTBUH 2016 Tall Building Awards. This year’s awards program received 132 submissions.
VIA 57 West in New York City was named the Best Tall Building Americas winner for creating an entirely new type of high-rise. According to architect Bjarke Ingels Group, the tower combines the "Manhattan skyscraper with the traditional European perimeter block," earning it the title of “courtscraper.” Langan provided geotechnical and site/civil engineering, below-grade waterproofing design, and construction administration for the project, which is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification.
Also in New York City, the Hearst Tower was recognized with the 10 Year Award for proven value and performance over a period of time. Completed in 2006, the tower was ahead of its time in terms of historic preservation. Langan provided geotechnical and site/civil engineering, subsurface investigation, vibration monitoring, and preconstruction conditions survey for the landmark tower.
The Tower at PNC Plaza in Pittsburgh was named a Best Tall Building Americas finalist for setting a new standard in sustainability and performance. Langan provided geotechnical and value engineering for the project.
The CTBUH Tall Building Awards are an independent review of new projects, judged by a prestigious panel of experts. The awards aspire to provide a more comprehensive and sophisticated view of these important structures, while advocating for improvements in every aspect of performance, including those that have the greatest positive impact on the individuals who use these buildings and the cities they inhabit.
