SITE-WIDE
REMEDIAL INVESTIGATION
Langan has implemented a comprehensive
Remedial Investigation at this 250-acre active manufacturing facility
to address and close numerous former waste treatment and disposal
units, including a wastewater and sludge surface impoundment,
an industrial waste landfill and a multiple lagoon and sludge
disposal system. Initial remedial evaluations assessed the feasibility
of consolidating wastes from the impoundment and lagoon system
within the landfill or other sludge disposal areas. The impact
of remedial activities at the active lagoon system, and an assessment
of current operational discharges and potential system upgrades
is of extreme importance to plant management. Langan is also characterizing
groundwater conditions in the area of these waste disposal units.
Detailed hydraulic analysis were performed to determine the interaction
of tidal surface water bodies, shallow groundwater, deep groundwater
and site hydrologic features. This has included piezometer installation,
groundwater monitoring, surface water elevation measurements,
aquifer testing and detailed logging of soil test borings. The
results of the hydrogeologic assessment were used to evaluate
the effectiveness of the existing groundwater monitoring system
and to support development of a Groundwater Protection Program
Plan for the ongoing NJPDES-DGW permit for the lagoons. This has
involved evaluation of appropriate groundwater/surface water quality
standards and compliance points for the permit. The results of
the hydrogeologic assessment support the ongoing Remedial Investigation
of Groundwater and Surface Water at the site.
