Langan Emerging Contaminants Experience

Langan provides an integrated mix of environmental and engineering consulting services in support of design and application of remediation technologies in treating emerging contaminants (EC) for our corporate, energy, developer, property owner, public agency and institutional clients.

Langan’s environmental scientists and professionals understand the technical and regulatory challenges posed by ECs – particularly 1,4-dioxane, perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS). We are applying our expertise to guide our clients in assessing and addressing EC concerns, and we are contributing to the development of new approaches for managing and remediating ECs through our involvement with various state-led regulatory stakeholder processes and through our participation in PFAS team recently formed by the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC).

Verizon – Facility Decontamination & Regulatory Closure

OVERVIEW
Langan was retained by Verizon to identify requirements and coordinate and complete closure of the Youngwood Material Reclamation Center (MRC) regulated under Verizon’s General Permit for Statewide Beneficial use of Residual Waste. The MRC facility was formerly used for the centralized handling and processing of materials for reuse, resale, recycling and/or disposal. Materials include all Verizon’s used or obsolete telecommunications equipment, primarily including lead and non-lead sheathed copper telephone cable, electronic switching equipment and computer plug-in cards.

Confidential Site, NY – Environmental Remediation

OVERVIEW
Langan provided environmental remediation services for the redevelopment of a large former distribution center site into a new mixed-use space. Langan’s environmental team performed soil, soil vapor, and groundwater sampling analysis, as well as prepared a conceptual site model. Groundwater at the site was impacted with both petroleum-related and chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Langan recommended a combined remedial approach entailing the direct injection of NaOH-activated persulfate followed by the injection of liquid activated carbon (PlumeStop®) through a network of underground piping below the new building slab. The on-going performance monitoring showed that the process resulted in complete removal (100%) of all petroleum related VOCs and two orders of magnitude reduction of chlorinated VOCs.

Hyde Beach Residence Dewatering

OVERVIEW
This project involves the construction of 40+ story condominium tower and parking garage. The site, a former gasoline service station, was contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil and groundwater, which was very shallow and required dewatering to enable construction. Excavations were to occur in an organic peat layer and the Miami Limerock, which is highly permeable but not suitable for many methods of dewatering. Langan provided dewatering design and permitting services for multiple phases of the foundation and utility construction at the entire project site.

Alameda Point Site A

OVERVIEW
The 878-acre former naval air station known as Alameda Point is one of the Bay Area’s largest redevelopment areas. Plans include a mixed-use project on a 69-acre portion of the site next to the Seaplane Lagoon, known as Site A, which includes creative reuse of the military and historic buildings as well as new infrastructure and buildings. Langan has explored soil and groundwater conditions and evaluated the site for seismic hazards. Our environmental team is providing soil gas sampling and vapor intrusion assessment services at the Navy petroleum site.
