The Studio Museum in Harlem
OVERVIEW
The Studio Museum in Harlem broke ground on its new home in 2018 to celebrate the institution’s 50th anniversary. Designed in accordance with the museum’s core values of openness and engagement, the six-story, 83,820 SF building provides twice the exhibition space to showcase artists of African descent. The facility was constructed on the same site as the previous museum through a public-private initiative with the City of New York. Langan conducted a subsurface investigation with our geotechnical test pit study to evaluate environmental conditions and collected environmental samples in a single mobilization, which accelerated the project schedule and saved the client money. We also submitted applications and permits to multiple city agencies and prepared a geotechnical report with subsurface information, a seismic evaluation, and foundation recommendations. During the investigation, we worked with the museum to overcome challenges related to working in restricted areas, mitigating noise and dust, and following a tight schedule planned around the exhibitions.
