The Price of PFAS

Developing Solutions for Cost-Effective PFAS Remediation

PFAS remediation budgets are on the rise as operational challenges of this complex group of chemicals affect nearly every sector of environmental consulting. Cleanup costs can range from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars per site, but experienced teams are developing solutions that are both effective and economically viable.

Why Costs Escalate

PFAS compounds behave differently in the environment and respond variably to treatment technologies. This variability, combined with limited large-scale destructive technologies and regulatory uncertainty, often drives up costs. The key to controlling these expenses lies in addressing these challenges early and strategically.

By engaging an environmental consultant specializing in PFAS in the early stages of a project, teams can proactively address uncertainties without increasing expenses. Langan recently helped a client navigate PFAS-related challenges at a site in Wisconsin—a state that typically requires substantial reductions in contaminant mass. Initial remediation estimates ranged from $9 million to $45 million. Langan responded to these cost-prohibitive estimates by demonstrating that the on-site groundwater plume was stable and worked with regulators to forgo mass removal, achieving regulatory acceptance and significant cost savings without compromising environmental protection.

Methods That Deliver Results

Langan’s team considers multiple approaches when helping clients remediate PFAS at a site—all focused on reducing costs while meeting regulatory and environmental goals. These include:

— Early Risk Assessment and Data-Driven Decisions: By conducting thorough site characterizations and risk evaluations at the outset, Langan can identify opportunities to avoid unnecessary remediation steps. This proactive approach prevents costly surprises later in the project.

— Regulatory Engagement and Flexibility: Working closely with regulators to explore risk-based solutions, such as containment strategies instead of full mass removal, can significantly lower costs. These strategies maintain protection while avoiding over-engineered solutions.

— Integrated Modeling and Advanced Analytics: Employing real-world data and predictive modeling tools, the team tailors remediation plans to meet site-specific conditions. This reduces uncertainty and confirms that resources are being directed to areas where they will have the greatest impact.

The Path Forward

Cost-effective PFAS remediation is achievable with better science, smarter policies, and an experienced team. By combining advanced analytical methods, demonstration-scale technology validation, and early regulatory engagement, Langan helps clients turn complex challenges into manageable solutions.
