Rooftop Renaissance
Langan’s Landscape Practice Brings Life to Urban Rooftops
While Langan’s services are often known to be from the “ground down,” you might miss some of our best work … up on the roof. The firm’s landscape architects have built an impressive portfolio of green roof projects in New York, New Haven, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, San Francisco, and multiple New Jersey cities.
Rooftop placemaking may not be a new thing, but the variety of urban lifestyle amenities one can find atop hotels, restaurants, night clubs, hospitals, residential buildings, or parking garages inspire the perfect blend of practicality and sustainability– not to mention cool. Projects range from chic lounges, pools, and tennis courts to daycare centers, kitchens, and healing gardens.
“Activating rooftops and terraces allows us to be extremely creative design-wise, but also requires close collaboration with our architectural and engineering colleagues because these projects are very challenging from a regulatory and building technology standpoint,” said Jayne Spector, PLA, ASLA, LEED AP, and Associate at Langan. “We strive to balance the human purpose of the new space with critical considerations including climate, structural loading, stormwater management, and permitting aspects in the design of vertical landscapes.”
In an effort to help educate developers, property owners, architectural allies, and contractors, Langan offers an AIA-accredited presentation called Designing Landscapes on Structure. To request our green roof workshop, click here.
