Nearly 40 College Students Supported Langan Projects Despite the Pandemic

On a Monday morning in July dozens of aspiring engineers and scientists rolled out of their beds and commuted a few steps to their work spaces, where they eagerly logged on and met their new coworkers. Sound unusual? Welcome to life as a Langan summer intern in the midst of COVID-19.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, Langan remained dedicated to its summer internship program from July 6 through August 21 – with some necessary adjustments. Through a collaboration among human resources, IT, and office leaders, the firm successfully welcomed 38 interns, all while continuing to primarily work away from the office. Representing top colleges including Cornell University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and University of California, Berkeley among others, the interns supported offices spanning the United States and assisted disciplines from engineering and environmental services to surveying, landscape architecture, and IT.

“The students who participate in Langan’s internship program play an integral role in the workforce and culture of our firm,” said Beverly Williams, Chief Human Resources Officer at Langan. “Our goal is to provide each individual with hands-on project experience, training opportunities, and a chance to apply academic knowledge in a practical way. In response to the pandemic, we quickly shifted our focus and found new ways to deliver the same robust programming for college students across the country.”

By using virtual platforms for project discussions, technical report preparation, environmental studies, landscape architecture design, and even social events, Langan interns connected with colleagues regardless of physical location. So while many aspects of life may have drastically changed in the past six months, Langan still provided its summer interns with a multifaceted “real-world” employment experience that truly made them feel at home.
