Tech Focus: Simplifying Data Management for Complex Sites
Guiding projects through the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Site Remediation and Waste Program is a unique process, especially for those unfamiliar with New Jersey regulations. Technical requirements, project-specific regulatory and mandatory timeframes, and administrative requirements are ever-evolving, which can get complicated when working on complex sites with over a decade of environmental history, commingled contaminant plumes, or off-site sources.
Imagine settling into a new professional role and having to quickly get up to speed on numerous legacy sites, with very little experience related to New Jersey regulations. You’re handed stack after stack of reports containing decades worth of analytical data, correspondence, and information, which requires several months—even years—to sift through and fully understand.
A similar situation recently occurred with an individual who started working for one of Langan’s long-standing clients. Our digital solutions team quickly developed multiple solutions, including a control center for the client’s environmental sites, a repository for all related reports and correspondence, a project timeline tracking tool, and a dashboard/webviewer to review and analyze the site data seamlessly. Webviewers allow teams to visualize data spatially, enhancing how the data is presented and providing a deeper understanding of that data. Users can query specific database fields, including sample locations, sampling events, individual analytes, and depths, and add field data to ArcGIS to create a central repository for data. These tools are especially beneficial for time-sensitive projects and for teams seeking to enhance efficiency across projects. With all this data at your fingertips, you can confidently work through it at your own pace and more easily digest the information through the webviewer’s enhanced presentation of data.
Langan’s New Jersey Licensed Site Remediation Professionals (LSRPs) lead clients through these regulatory and administrative requirements and provide technical expertise to efficiently bring projects to closure. By collaborating with the digital solutions team to leverage available technology, our LSRPs and project managers can implement innovative tools to manage data, track project deliverables and timeframes, and present data clearly and concisely.
