Reclaiming the Waterfront
Langan designs solutions for shoreline protection and waterfront structures.
As Brooklyn-native Gregory Biesiadecki looks down the shoreline from a bulkhead construction site in Red Hook, he admires how city agencies and developers are revitalizing underutilized land into vibrant, waterfront destinations. He and Langan are literally right there too—at the water’s edge—providing technical expertise and practical experience to evaluate and prepare design packages for construction.
“Growing up and becoming an engineer in New York City, I have seen firsthand how a derelict waterfront steadily decays and becomes isolated after years of disuse,” said Biesiadecki, a Principal in Langan’s New York office. “Waterfronts now serve multifunctional purposes. Cities across the country are transforming these areas into inspired public spaces that also create opportunities for commercial development.”
Although Biesiadecki and his team are based in Manhattan, they have worked with property owners across the country to help assess and rejuvenate waterfront sites. The waterfront group assesses the conditions of existing shorelines and waterfront structures to determine the best approach for reuse, replacement, or new construction. Waterfront solutions are customized to protect people and infrastructure, and to meet development needs, site conditions, and regulatory requirements, with a tendency toward resilient, sustainable design. Solutions include repairs and improvements to existing elements, or the design of new shoreline protection measures such as bulkheads, seawalls, revetments, and vegetated slopes, and also waterfront structures like piers, wharfs, and ferry landings.
With many offices on or near major bodies of water, Langan serves all major coastal regions, as well as river and lake front properties. So from a boathouse pier in New Haven to a bulkhead beneath a residential complex in Tampa, and from a levee for a massive new pump station near New Orleans to a wharf evaluation at oil terminals in the San Francisco Bay Area, Langan knows how to help land meet water.
