Philip Tringale Inducted into UC Berkeley Academy of Distinguished Alumni

The University of California (UC), Berkeley inducted Langan Chair of the Board Philip Tringale, PhD, PE, into the prestigious Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Academy of Distinguished Alumni. Tringale was honored during UC Berkeley’s annual banquet and induction ceremony on Thursday, June 16, 2022.

The academy’s annual induction ceremony recognizes the outstanding career accomplishments of select CEE alumni, their record of service to UC Berkeley’s engineering program, and their contributions to societal well-being and development.

Tringale earned his M.Eng. and PhD degrees in civil engineering from UC Berkeley, with a specific focus on geotechnical engineering and site characterization. Since graduating with his PhD in 1983, Tringale has worked as a geotechnical and environmental engineer providing consulting and expert witness services to public and private sector clients throughout the United States. His expertise includes brownfields redevelopment, superfund remediation and compliance programs, and third-party review and strategic consulting; he has also served as a testifying expert in state and federal courts. Tringale also helped develop guidelines for a report to the U.S. Congress titled “Protecting the Nation’s Groundwater from Contamination.”

As part of the induction ceremony, banquet sponsors and distinguished alumni raised $100,000 to support Community-Engaged Education in Civil & Environmental Engineering, or (CEE)2. This program is designed to attract local students with greater gender and racial diversity to engineering. From earthquake resilience to green infrastructure, (CEE)2 engages students in local projects, emphasizing the opportunity to envision and develop solutions to some of the area’s most fundamental challenges.
