Transformative Willets Point Project Highlighted in Commercial Observer
by: Nicole VeenstraCommercial Observer recently published an article entitled “A Closer Look at the Transformation of Willets Point” focused on the ongoing redevelopment project, which encompasses 23 acres of previously neglected land.
Once complete, Willets Point will reflect and serve the many diverse communities of Queens, while driving long-term economic growth and investment in the region. The project will add 2,500 100% affordable residential units, 150,000 SF of public open space, 20,000 SF of neighborhood-serving retail space, a fully electric soccer stadium, a 650-seat public school, a 250-room hotel, and improved infrastructure.
Langan has been actively involved in the Willets Point redevelopment for over a decade, providing multidisciplinary services from the beginning. The firm led the project through the Brownfield Cleanup Program; developed a soil remediation plan that incorporated future building, utility, and roadway foundations into the environmental design; provided site/civil services for thousands of linear feet of NYCDEP sewer and water infrastructure; and performed surveying and mobile mapping of the entire site and surrounding roadway.
Article excerpt:
“Langan has played an active role in the Willets Point project for over a decade, providing integrated services to prepare the site and its infrastructure for this historic redevelopment,” said Michele O’Connor, PE, LEED AP, Senior Principal, Langan. “We’re thrilled to support the transformation of this underutilized area of Queens into a welcoming space that prioritizes diverse communities, economic growth, and sustainable development.”
