China Basin Park

OVERVIEW
The five-acre China Basin Park is part of the 3.6 million SF Mission Rock development, which is transforming a former industrial site and parking lot into a mixed-use, waterfront community. The park provides panoramic views of the Bay Bridge and Oracle Park, as well as a central plaza, restaurant pavilion, knuckle wharf, kayak launch dock, and lifted grove designed for flexible programming and cultural events. The project posed challenges related to designing for resiliency against earthquakes and sea level rise. Langan helped develop buildable and economical solutions to raise grades by 66 inches and limit settlement by using lightweight fill and conducting ground improvements. We also developed a monitoring program and adaption plan if the sea level rises faster than anticipated, performed geotechnical construction observation, and provided quality assurance services during placement of the compensating lightweight fill and construction of the park elements.
