Gowanus Canal Waterfront Projects

OVERVIEW

Gowanus Canal and the surrounding area are undergoing a massive redevelopment, transforming the former industrial hub into a thriving mixed-use neighborhood. Project designs located within the redevelopment area are required to accommodate cleanup activities—dredging and capping the bottom of the waterway—because the Gowanus Canal is a Superfund site on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Priorities List.

Langan is actively participating in the neighborhood’s transformation, providing a full suite of integrated services for the canal cleanup efforts and surrounding developments. To date, we have supported more than two dozen projects along the Gowanus Canal.

Our responsibilities include environmental and geotechnical investigations, Brownfield Cleanup Program assistance, remedial investigations, Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Phase II Environmental Site Investigations, bulkhead evaluations, construction inspection, and site management plans to obtain Certificates of Completion. We also conducted subsurface explorations for the evaluation and replacement of bulkhead structures, provided customized designs for each bulkhead, and collaborated closely with the EPA throughout.
