Mission Bay Bayfront Park
OVERVIEW
Located near Chase Center, Mission Bay Bayfront Park is a 5.5-acre waterfront park that honors San Francisco’s maritime history through reclaimed materials and addresses sea level rise with resilient design elements. Langan served as the geotechnical engineer, providing investigation, design recommendations, and construction observation services for the site’s complex subsurface conditions. Underlain by compressible Bay Mud and vulnerable to long-term settlement, seismic activity, and projected sea level rise, the project required close coordination between engineering and design teams. Langan recommended lightweight geofoam fill to raise grades while minimizing loading on underlying soils and used deep foundation systems, including drilled piers, to support key park features. During construction, Langan monitored subgrade preparation, utility trench backfill, grading, and foundation installation to help ensure long-term performance.
