UCSF Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building
OVERVIEW
The UCSF Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building serves as a national leader in psychiatry, psychology training, and clinical research on brain disorders. The facility features space for outpatient clinical care related to pediatric, neurology, and pre-term birth obstetric clinics, an auditorium and conference room, a central atrium, ground-floor retail, and administrative workspaces. Langan performed geotechnical investigations and environmental site characterizations for the 170,000 SF building and associated site improvements. Our subsurface explorations identified challenges including varying site grades and the presence of up to 20 feet of uncontrolled fill, soft clay (including young bay mud), steeply sloping bedrock, contaminated soil, and more. We developed design-level foundation recommendations and helped gain swift project approval from the UC Seismic Review Committee. We also conducted environmental soil sampling to delineate the extent of contaminated material and reduce disposal quantities of Class I non-RCRA hazardous material and Class II non-hazardous material excavated during construction.
