Walter Gladwin Recreation Center
OVERVIEW
Located within Walter Gladwin Park, this 40,800 GSF recreation and community center will provide inclusive, universally accessible fitness amenities and programs for all ages. The facility is the city’s first to use cross-laminated timber for a recreational center with the goal of encouraging more mass timber public projects to help set a standard for low-carbon buildings. Project challenges included complex subsurface conditions, as the site is located atop a fault line with a mixture of shallow rock, highly fractured rock, and soft compressible upper strata. Langan developed and performed a geotechnical exploration program, prepared a geotechnical report, and supported the foundation design, which combined shallow and deep foundations. We also designed the support of excavation system and provided full-time engineering inspection of the borings. New York City Economic Development Corporation selected the center as its inaugural project for the NYC Mass Timber Studio, a climate innovation program.
