Watchung Square

OVERVIEW
Langan was hired to provide fast-track, design build, geotechnical engineering services to stabilize and repair a large slope failure, which had occurred at the Watchung Square Mall during construction. The failure resulted in a scarp ranging in height from 5 – 15 feet and extending 2,000 LF along the base of the Watchung Mountains. Langan designed a steel sheetpile wall tied back with multiple levels of double corrosion protected soil anchors to withstand the predicted forces of the creeping hillside. Langan also provided survey monitoring of the wall both during and after construction to assure the stability of the wall and designed a system of horizontal drains to relieve any future build-up of hydrostatic pressure.
