UC Merced – Campuswide Expansion

OVERVIEW
The UC Merced 2020 Expansion is an unprecedented four-year project that nearly doubled the physical capacity of the campus, allowing it to grow to 10,000 students and expanded it to 219 acres. The P3 project required extensive scheduling in order to be completed by 2020. Scheduled in three delivery phases, the expansion included 16 buildings, two bridges, new roads and parking lots, and several athletic facilities and fields. Construction challenges involved building two facilities in a reclaimed part of Little Lake and constructing two bridges crossing Fairfield Canal, an unlined irrigation canal that snakes around the campus.

Prism at Park Avenue South Apartments

OVERVIEW
Located in the Madison Square North (NoMad) section of Manhattan, this 40-story residential tower (476-FT) has a combined total of 363 apartments and condominiums. The development scope included demolition of existing structures, excavation to 30 feet below sidewalk grade, construction of the 40-story tower, and replacement of a portion of the adjacent subway station. Langan geotechnical engineers performed two phases of site investigation and provided design and construction recommendations to satisfy project needs and New York City Department of Buildings requirements. Our environmental engineers performed waste characterization and provided coordination with NYCOER that included remediation investigation and oversight, and a successful Voluntary Cleanup Program Brownfield Incentive Grant Application.

Bartram’s Mile

OVERVIEW
Langan helped the City of Philadelphia transform a one-mile stretch of vacant river frontage along the western banks of the tidal Schuylkill through the extension of the Schuylkill River Trail and the creation of new parks and an innovative neighborhood stormwater management system. Langan was responsible for the conceptual design of the stormwater system; permitting; geotechnical investigation; and final design of all elements of the project, including trail design, traffic engineering, and complete streets design.

Grove at Grand Bay

OVERVIEW
The former Grand Bay Hotel site was replaced by two 21-story luxury residential towers and a three-level podium in Coconut Grove. The varying depth to the towers' bearing layers required that augercast pile foundations vary from intermediate to deeper depths. Langan worked closely with the project design team and the general contractor to understand loading requirements and site constraints caused by former precast pile foundations from the previous development, as well as potential impacts to neighboring properties from the project construction activities. Langan's coordinated geotechnical studies were performed prior to and during demolition of the former building, which resulted in timely foundation designs for the two towers and amenities podium.

CREC Discovery Academy

OVERVIEW
The Discovery Academy is a magnet school facilitated with the Capital Region Education Council (CREC). The project included the renovation of a former 50,000-SF Connecticut Light and Power building which served as office and service space. A 10,000-SF gymnasium was added to the west of the existing building. Throughout the remainder of the property, upgrades to the site included new parking areas, rain gardens, and soccer fields. Specific design challenges associated with the site included the presence of shallow bedrock, renovations to the existing building, and partial demolition of the existing basement underneath the building that was to remain.
