UC Merced – Campuswide Expansion

OVERVIEW
The UC Merced 2020 Expansion is an unprecedented four-year project that nearly doubled the physical capacity of the campus, allowing it to grow to 10,000 students and expanded it to 219 acres. The P3 project required extensive scheduling in order to be completed by 2020. Scheduled in three delivery phases, the expansion included 16 buildings, two bridges, new roads and parking lots, and several athletic facilities and fields. Construction challenges involved building two facilities in a reclaimed part of Little Lake and constructing two bridges crossing Fairfield Canal, an unlined irrigation canal that snakes around the campus.

University of Miami – Centennial Village

OVERVIEW
Centennial Village is a 522,000 SF lakefront residential community for first-year students at the University of Miami, and the second phase of a multi-year plan to modernize campus housing. Located on Lake Osceola, the sustainable development will consist of five residential buildings—ranging from eight to 10 floors—with approximately 2,025 beds. Langan conducted a geotechnical investigation of 21 acres, provided building foundation recommendations, evaluated geotechnical conditions of the culvert crossing, and conducted a water and sanitary sewer evaluation of the infrastructure system. We also prepared plans to relocate and upsize potable water distribution and gravity sewer collection systems, and developed plans to combine sanitary sewer collection areas and replace two pumping stations with one larger station.

University of Miami – Converge Miami

OVERVIEW
The research and development park provides office and laboratory space for companies to collaborate with UM researchers, making it easier to turn scientific discoveries into commercial products. The 1.4-million SF research and development complex includes multiple mid-rise buildings and associated parking structures. Langan prepared paving, grading, and drainage plans to expand the surface parking field and obtained a “Drainage Connection Permit” from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which was required because the project abuts an FDOT-operated roadway. We also performed a geotechnical exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions, spearheaded the pile load test program, and conducted earthwork monitoring and testing, which was complicated by environmental impacts in the soil and groundwater. Our detailed evaluation of excavated materials allowed for the reuse of materials as structural fill and pavement base course. This avoided the need for imported fill, resulting in considerable cost savings.

USciences – 1st Year Residence Hall

OVERVIEW
To better meet the needs of its students, University of the Sciences constructed a new, 126,000-SF mixed-use residence hall on the its main campus in the University City area of Philadelphia. The 426-bed residence hall for first-year students is a live-learn community that incorporates numerous sustainable features to achieve Green Globes building certification through the Green Building Initiative. To facilitate this new development, Langan designed the open-air plaza and streetscape on the neighboring streets and spearheaded the land-development permitting process with the City of Philadelphia agencies. The tight urban site, combined with substantial grade changes around the property, created complexity; especially with respect to the stormwater management and ADA accessible design.

Swarthmore College – NPPR Residence Hall

OVERVIEW
In order to accommodate a rapidly growing student population, Swarthmore College added a 128-bed residence hall near its Palmer, Pittenger and Roberts residence-hall complex. Langan provided site/civil, survey, and geotechnical engineering services to facilitate designing, permitting, and constructing the new residence hall. The project was designed to minimize environmental impact by following the recommendations established in the college’s sustainability framework. To meet the college’s sustainability goals, Langan worked closely with the project landscape architect, Studio Bryan Haynes, to design the site to preserve trees, respect the ball fields adjacent to the resident-hall quadrant, provide outdoor space for student enjoyment, provide low-impact stormwater-management features, and conserve energy. Langan’s experience with designing and permitting innovative stormwater management on tight urban sites was a key contribution to the success in the design and approval process for this project.
