Langan Helps Find Ways Forward for Workforce and Affordable Housing
Supply chain disruption is being felt in every household, and that includes houses, or more critically – affordable housing. Long before the pandemic, cities wrestled with finding ways to increase residential inventory for all income levels. Langan has been on the front lines of that cause, providing much more than core environmental and engineering services.
“When it comes to advancing affordable housing projects, we certainly bring value with respect to solving technical and regulatory challenges, but our value add is in how we help clients connect with subsidy programs that make such projects pencil out,” said Gerry Nicholls, Associate, Langan. “For example, Langan has shepherded over 50 sites through the New York State Brownfield Cleanup Program, which is incredibly gratifying considering the importance of building workforce housing in and around the city. To date, our clients have obtained over $500 million in tax credits through the BCP, directly benefiting environmental cleanups and the advancement of affordable housing.”
Similar initiatives are in play in the Bay Area, where Langan is a trusted consultant in combating the lack of affordable and workforce housing in the region, most pointedly in San Francisco. Multi-family projects are complex, and clients recognize the need for a consultant like Langan to streamline solutions for the myriad matters that derail even the best of intentions.
To counter the out-migration occurring in other major urban areas around the country, Langan is proactively monitoring agency stimulus programs, serving in essence as a business partner to clients looking to increase their efforts or get into the affordable/workforce housing market. While recessionary headwinds could slow progress in some sectors, progress must continue in providing the most basic of human and societal needs: housing.
