Making Projects Pencil Out
Langan Streamlines Affordable Housing Projects in Major Cities
Performing engineering and environmental services in urban areas is challenging from a technical and regulatory standpoint. But perhaps the biggest impediment to progress is financial. In other words, without incentive programs to help developers pencil out their projects, critical needs may not be met, which has a direct impact on one market in particular—affordable housing.
Langan has long understood the business behind residential development in many U.S. cities. After all, with 50+ offices around the country, we call those cities home. That’s why Langan engineers, scientists, and planners collaborate to connect clients with funding sources and close gaps in their pro formas.
From Seattle to San Francisco, Los Angeles to Denver, and from Chicago to the New York Metro area, Langan has built a strong portfolio of affordable and workforce housing projects. Our role covers the technical side, including environmental contamination, difficult soil conditions, limited utilities, and permitting. Yet we also help clients navigate national financial incentives, such as the U.S. EPA Brownfields Program, and localized grants, like the King County Housing Finance Program in Washington, Denver’s Expanding Housing Affordability policy, and the New York State Brownfield Cleanup Program.

“The foundation of Langan’s business is investing in the places where we live and work, and our commitment to affordable housing embodies that,” said Jen Cutright, Environmental Associate, Langan, who is based in Seattle. “What better way to give back than to develop housing that allows residents to remain local, close to work, and within their price range? We’re proud to come together to support housing initiatives nationwide and help our communities thrive.”
