Langan plays leadership role in CTBUH’s first ever Geotechnical Engineering Awards

When Tasos went to Shenzhen, China, he brought Brooklyn with him.

Translation: last month, Langan Senior Associate Tasos Papathanasiou, based in New York, presented on the geotechnical challenges of Avalon Brooklyn Bay during the Council of Tall Buildings Urban Habitat Tall + Urban Innovation Awards, which featured a new category – the Tall Building Geotechnical Engineering Award.

Langan Managing Principal Alan Poeppel was also on hand, serving as Chair for the inaugural award, which, according to the CTBUH: “recognizes projects that have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of geotechnical engineering in tall buildings, and that take the technical solutions and possibilities for tall buildings to the next level.” Poeppel also presented at the conference, his topic: The Future of Geotechnical Engineering in Tall Buildings.

“We want to thank CTBUH for acknowledging how innovative foundation solutions combined with rigorous analyses contribute to the design and construction of high-rise structures around the world,” said Papathanasiou. “Our role does not directly contribute to the visible glamour or experience of so-called skyscrapers, but we play a critical role in building performance and safety, while allowing complex architectural and structural designs to be realized.”
