Al Wasl Plaza

OVERVIEW
Referred to as the beating heart of Expo 2020 Dubai, Al Wasl Plaza is a 67.7-meter steel trellis dome with a 360-degree immersive projection surface. Originally built for the expo—which was delayed to October 2021 due to COVID-19—the public plaza integrated nature and technology and hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as multiple main events, during the six-month celebration. Langan studied the project’s transportation infrastructure to examine its horizontal alignment compatibility with car and truck circulation, tested loading docks for truck maneuverability, and designed ramps to allow for efficient truck operations and access. We also conducted multiple studies of the parking areas and helped design the roundabout with provisions to accommodate articulated buses and include required traffic control signage.
