Freshkills Park

Over the next 30 years, the former Fresh Kills Landfill will be transformed into the 2,200-acre Freshkills Park by converting the landfill and surrounding wetlands, waterways, and vegetated lowlands, into a park three times the size of Central Park. Langan provided site/civil engineering services for three phases of construction: South Park, North Park, and Arthur Kill Parking Lot. Challenges included the necessity of placing a two-foot cap of clean soil above the entire site, as required by NYSDEC. This prevented digging trenching for the swales and required our design to make use of existing drainage patterns and slopes.
