Newark Penn Station Pedestrian Improvements

OVERVIEW
Langan evaluated the benefits of a proposed pedestrian bridge intended to provide improved pedestrian access to Penn Station over the congested McCarter Highway. The goal of the study was to evaluate proposed connectivity options, and to determine the benefits of implementing the proposed pedestrian bridge.  Langan considered various options for the bridge, including improved at-grade signal timing and phasing, widened sidewalks and improved streetscape design. For each alternative, the project team evaluated existing and future conditions along the pedestrian network connecting Newark Penn Station and the Prudential Center. Langan also developed a VISSIM-based simulation model to demonstrate that the existing at-grade network would not be able to accommodate projected future pedestrian demand.
