Santa Barbara Airport – Plane Crash Cleanup
OVERVIEW
Langan provided environmental services following the release of jet fuel from a plane crash. The airport firefighters covered the jet fuel release with Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) to prevent the potential of a fire, but AFFF contains Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). Our team conducted a soil investigation and designed mitigation measures to avoid potential impact on reaching groundwater during the rainy season. To determine the volume of soil impacted, we implemented an environmental forensics approach by sampling and analyzing the AFFF for the 23 specific PFAS compounds required in the State Water Resources Control Board Water Code Section 13267. We also presented an Interim Remedial Action Plan to remediate soil from the area impacted by the crash.
