MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper University Hospital

OVERVIEW
Langan is supporting the multi-story, 103,000-SF world-class cancer institute. The design includes a public plaza and garden, and a renovated landscape. The project has undergone extensive conceptual planning, programming, and site planning studies to locate the facility on an extremely tight urban site. Stormwater runoff from the proposed site was minimized by reducing the amount of on-site surface parking in favor of a heavily landscaped plaza space.

St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Hospital

OVERVIEW
Langan prepared a preliminary feasibility study to evaluate the possibility of developing a healthcare complex on one of three separate sites. We identified significant development constraints, prepared base maps and concept plans and provided a comparison table that describes the pros and cons for each development site. Once the site was selected at Route 663 and Portzer Road, Langan performed a preliminary due diligence investigation. Langan provided preliminary/schematic design, preliminary land development, preliminary traffic design and permitting, final land development submissions and permitting, geotechnical engineering, and site architectural and landscape design.

UPMC South Tower Deconstruction

OVERVIEW
UPMC is selectively deconstructing part of the existing South Tower, Old Children's Hospital, on their downtown Pittsburgh campus. Langan designed and permitted the site and site logistics of the deconstruction. Safe and efficient pedestrian and vehicular access, as well as parking demand and re-assignment have been planned. Langan performed an environmental site assessment to identify environmental issues, and has implemented a groundwater monitoring program that will evaluate seasonal groundwater fluctuations. The results of the program will be used in the dewatering analysis.

Mills-Peninsula Medical Center

OVERVIEW
Sutter Health's Mills Peninsula Medical Center is a 6-story acute care hospital with 311 beds. The hospital required seismic design review by the State of California Office of Statewide Healthcare Planning and Development (OSHPD). This is the first hospital in the Northern California with a base-isolation structural system. Connected to the hospital is a 5-story medical office building and a 4-level parking garage. Langan performed a geologic hazard evaluation and geotechnical investigation. We also developed seismic design criteria and time histories for use in the structural design. Sutter Health most recently obtained Langan’s services for a helipad.

UCSF Parnassus Moffitt Hospital

OVERVIEW
Langan provided engineering services for the seismic evaluation of the existing Moffitt Hospital and Medical Sciences Building at the UCSF Parnassus Campus. The Moffitt Hospital is a 15-story concrete structure over one basement level. The northern wing of the Medical Sciences Building is a 13-story structure over one basement level, while the southern wing is a 14-story structure at grade. We reviewed subsurface information at the site and its vicinity, developed site-specific response spectra, and provided geotechnical foundation criteria for existing walls and footings. After performing a downhole seismic velocity survey and drilling a 100-foot deep boring, we recommended vertical and rotational stiffness parameters of existing foundations and response spectra for the appropriate soil profile type. Our team performed probabilistic seismic hazard analyses and deterministic analyses to develop response spectra for two levels of shaking for each building.

VA Palo Alto Healthcare System

OVERVIEW
VA Palo Alto underwent an expansion to enhance the health care system for veterans, including construction of a 325,000 SF ambulatory care center, 174,000 SF polytrauma/blind rehabilitation center, 95,000 SF research facility, and 30,000 SF recreational therapy building. The expansion also added a radiology addition to the hospital, two parking structures, several utilities buildings, a water supply tank, and new utilities and roadways. Langan explored subsurface conditions by drilling borings and advancing CPTs, evaluated site issues and environmental conditions, sampled and analyzed soil and soil vapor, and prepared a groundwater management plan. We also observed and checked the installation of drilled pier foundations, footing excavations, building pad subgrade preparation, and utility trench backfill.
