LogistiCenter at I-95 Wilmington

OVERVIEW
The LogistiCenter at I-95 Wilmington includes a five-story, 3.8-million SF distribution center with 69 loading docks and nearly 3,000 parking spaces for employees and tractor trailers, as well as a 220,000 SF delivery station. The facility replaced a former General Motors assembly plant, which closed in 2009. Challenges arose during demolition of previous structures on-site; Langan helped mitigate those issues by developing feasible foundation solutions and reusing materials to minimize the need to export soils.

Greenwich High School Entryway

OVERVIEW
Greenwich High School is renovating its 6,000 SF main office entryway, including the vestibule, lobby, and office areas, to meet new state mandates for school building security. Langan provided soil characterization, conducted a subsurface exploration, and prepared a geotechnical engineering report with our findings and recommendations for the project. We collaborated on the front entry plaza redesign, utilizing site features to reimagine the space with seating areas, low-level site lighting, native plantings, drainage, and security improvements. We also worked with the town’s build committee to provide privacy for adjacent residences by adding screening along the front of the site.

Hudson Arts Building

OVERVIEW
Located at 220 Eleventh Avenue, the 150,000 SF, 10-story Hudson Arts Building is a sustainable, energy efficient, commercial building spanning a full city block in Chelsea. The facility envelops a ventilation building and shaft serving the nearby MTA No. 7 Line subway, and is supported by foundations shared with the MTA structure in addition to independent foundations within the cellar area. Langan provided site design and right-of-way improvements, worked with city agencies to obtain approvals for site/civil-related items, and prepared a geotechnical engineering study and site specific seismic study. We also conducted a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment and remedial investigation, and performed a field investigation with soil borings, groundwater sampling, and soil vapor testing. We will provide environmental and geotechnical oversight during excavation and foundation construction.

U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel

OVERVIEW
Built in 1962, the U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel is a striking aluminum, glass, and steel building with 17 spires reaching heights of 150 feet and seating for nearly 2,000 people. It serves as an all-faith center of worship for cadets and includes Protestant, Catholic, Jewish and Buddhist chapels, an All-Faiths Room, and a Falcon Circle, each with its own entrance. The Chapel is capable of holding services in all rooms at one time. In 2004, the chapel was recognized as a U.S. National Historic Landmark. The building is currently closed as it undergoes a major renovation and restoration. Langan’s survey team is laser scanning the structure and delivering the information needed to finalize the design of the new “skin” that will cover the chapel. We are also precisely locating and documenting the various structural elements that make up the 75-foot-long, five-ton spires, and designing moveable platforms that can bear the weight of the equipment used to laser scan those spires.

78 Haight

OVERVIEW
78 Haight is an eight-story, 100% affordable housing building with 63 homes for youth transitioning out of foster care and adults earning less than 65% of the Area Median Income. Amenities include a rooftop garden, bicycle parking, two community rooms, and a nonprofit childcare center. Langan provided a geotechnical investigation to evaluate subsurface conditions and develop geotechnical design criteria for foundations and seismic design. We are also conducting observation and testing during construction to confirm actual soil conditions and ensure the contractor’s work conforms to the geotechnical aspects of the plans and specifications.
