To Our Clients, Colleagues, Vendors, and Employees,
On behalf of all the Shareholders at Langan, I extend our deepest gratitude to you and ask you to join us in celebrating our 50th year in business – a noteworthy milestone indeed and one that would not have been achieved without your trust and commitment. We owe our success to you.
It all began in 1970, when Bernie Langan at age 30 courageously departed Woodward Clyde to start Langan Engineering Associates, a geotechnical and site/civil firm whose specialty would be developing innovative engineering solutions for challenges faced by real estate developers. Bernie’s partners were George Derrick, George Kelley, Dennis Leary and years later, Don Murphy established our environmental practice...
Their story, and that of Don Treadwell and Frank Rollo, is told in these pages. But it was Bernie Langan who established the culture and set the framework for the firm to prosper, and prosper it did. By 2004 when leadership transition to the next generation occurred, the firm had grown to 250 people with seven offices. In the years since, the strong growth has continued owing to an entrepreneurial culture established by our founders. Langan now has over 1,200 employees, 30 full-service offices nationwide, and several offices abroad.
Of course, none of our success would have been achieved without the trust and confidence of our clients. Our commitment to each of you is underscored by our Mission Statement:
“To contribute to the success of our clients by providing them with an unmatched combination of technical excellence, practical experience, and responsiveness.”
We have done our best over the years to hold true to these words, and believe that our clients would agree that time and again, we have delivered.
To our colleagues, you can take pride in knowing that you are a valuable part of building the organization we have today. The success has been both staggering and humbling. It has supported our growth, sustained so many families, and allowed Langan to positively impact the communities where we work and live. Our commitment to community has included tens of thousands of hours in pro bono work, impacting over 500 charitable causes. Through the generosity of our employees and Langan’s matching contributions, we have raised millions to aid people in need.
Our focus on sustainability has grown significantly over the years. We are proud of the role that Langan plays in redeveloping blighted areas, remediating contaminated sites, and integrating resiliency into our designs. Firm-wide, we have more than 100 LEED Accredited Professionals; and Langan played a leadership role in establishing the successful Licensed Site Remediation Professionals Association, which has greatly improved the pace of site clean-up. We are also pleased to provide our employees with modern offices and workspaces that incorporate a contemporary, environmentally sensitive design – which have received LEED Silver certifications. Moreover, in 2018, the firm achieved another great environmental milestone by becoming carbon neutral.
Langan’s commitment to the future of our industry is as strong as ever. Every year, our employees are active in organizations and events that advance our industry. Annually, Langan-endowed scholarships help students meet the rising cost of higher education. We continue to grow our relationships with the many colleges and universities that produce tomorrow’s professionals.
Their success is our success. Finally, to our employees: you are Langan. Your hard work, commitment and dedication is unsurpassed in the industry. We ask for technical excellence – you deliver. We ask for practical experience – you know how to combine theoretical science with what it takes to get the job done. We ask for client responsiveness – you provide our clients with exceptional service, second to none. All this you do, unrelenting, never tiring, with a level of energy and genuine care that makes us all proud to be a part of Langan. We thank you and your families for your continued dedication and commitment.
So, let us pause briefly to appreciate the magnitude of this 50-year milestone, and to thank all who have helped us get here. Then, we can all look to the future and envision how we at Langan can aspire to improve and continue to provide exceptional solutions to our clients for the next 50 years.
With Gratitude and Appreciation,
David T. Gockel
